We, at the Campolindo DNI Parents Group, are angered and saddened by this week's horrific events against members of the AAPI community in Atlanta, GA. Moreover, we are also enraged by the continued racist and discriminatory acts that are committed against this community as well. When one group hurts, we all hurt. Racism has affected multiple groups and communities for centuries but that does not mean that it needs to continue. We have an opportunity every day to disrupt horrible, unjust systemic policies, behaviors and processes. We need to stand up for and support each other and committ to doing our part (no complacency here!) to condemn and fight against racism in any and all forms.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, crimes against the AAPI community has risen more than 150%!

According to the latest Stop AAPI Hate National Report, there were 3,795 incidents received by the Stop AAPI Hate reporting center from March 19, 2020 to February 28, 2021. The number of hate incidents reported to our center represent only a fraction of the number of hate incidents that actually occur, but it does show how vulnerable Asian Americans are to discrimination, and the types of discrimination they face.

Types of discrimination

Verbal harassment (68.1%) and shunning (20.5%) (i.e., the deliberate avoidance of Asian Americans) make up the two largest proportions of the total incidents reported.

Physical assault (11.1%) comprises the third largest category of the total incidents.

Civil rights violations — e.g., workplace discrimination, refusal of service, and being barred from transportation — account for 8.5% of the total incidents.

Online harassment makes up 6.8% of the total incidents.

National Trends

Women report hate incidents 2.3 times more than men.

Youths (0 to 17 years old) report 12.6% of incidents and seniors (60 years old and older) report 6.2% of the total incidents.

Chinese are the largest ethnic group (42.2%) that report experiencing hate, followed by Koreans (14.8%), Vietnamese (8.5%), and Filipinos (7.9%).

Incident reports come from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Businesses are the primary site of discrimination (35.4%), followed by public streets (25.3%), and public parks (9.8%). Online incidents account for 10.8% of the total incidents.

Campolindo Student Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging Survey (October 2020)

59% of students witnessed a racist incident by a student on campus last year, with 46% witnessing more than one incident (also, 52% of students witnessed a racist incident in Moraga perpetrated by a non-student)

47% feel that "I can really be myself at Campo"

At the end of October, Campo released the results of their Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Belonging Survey, which students participated in on Oct. 5th. Impressively, 87% of 1,403 students submitted survey answers. Administration shared that the purpose of conducting this survey was the need to have each student voice matter.

During an informative "Campo Connect" session conducted with Parents following the publication of the survey, it was discussed that the benefits of retrieving this data are that it will help administration and the community to better understand where we are seeing increased growth, and which are the areas we need to focus on. The goal is to create and nurture a culture that is reflective of Campo's mission statement.
